The Prague Castle, the World's Largest Ancient Castle

The Prague Castle, Pražský hrad in Czech, is not only a fortress, but a vast complex of palaces, churches, and fortifications that have made it the world's largest ancient castle, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

It has served as a residence for the Kingdom of Bohemia and the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire, and even for the presidents of the Czech Republic. Its construction and evolutions covers over one thousand years of history.

What's Included in the Prague Castle?

Inside, you can access the main places of the castle:

St. Vitus Cathedral: is the most important religious monument in the country. This imposing Gothic masterpiece's construction took over 600 years and ended in 1929. Inside, you'll find the Bohemian crown jewels, which are only on display at very special occassions.
Old Royal Palace: served as the main residence of the princes and kings of Bohemia from the 9th century to the 16th century. Its Vladislav Hall is one of the largest late Gothic spaces in Europe, famous for its complex rib vault.
St. George's Basilica: is the castle's oldest religious building. Founded in the 10th century, its current red facade is an example of the Romanesque art in Bohemia, which was reconstructed in the 12th century.
Golden Lane: is one of the most photographed areas, famous for its small and colorful houses, which were inhabited back in the day by goldsmiths, alchemists, and later, by authors, such as the famous Franz Kafka.

The Lobkowicz Palace: Art, Music, & Scenic Views

Located inside the complex of the Prague Castle, the Lobkowicz Palace is the only private property inside the venue and a true architectural gem. This building is home to one of the most important private art collections in Central Europe, which belongs to the Lobkowicz noble family, whose history dates back to the 14th century.

To make this experience even better, you'll have an audio guide in English, with explanations narrated by members of the Lobkowicz family, who will offer a personal perspective into centuries of history.

The visit to this majestic palace offers a deep dive into more than 2000 years of history through the Lobkowicz Collections. Find out what you'll see inside:

Masterpieces of painting: you can admire original artworks by world-renowned painters, like Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Canaletto, and Velázquez.
Musical treasures: the palace displays a valuable collection of instruments, sheet music, and manuscripts with original notes from composers like Mozart and Beethoven, who kept close ties to the Lobkowicz family as patrons.
Artifacts and decorative arts.
Don't forget to climb up to the palace's balcony and enjoy the scenic views of Prague that will take your breath away.

Opening Times

All of the buildings of the Prague Castle are open for visitors daily from 9 am to 4 pm.
