On this private walking tour of Augsburg, you'll explore the history of one of Germany's oldest cities with an English-speaking guide all to yourselves.
We'll meet at Rathausplatz and kick off this private tour of Augsburg, an unmissable gem in Germany. Let's discover it!
First, we'll stop in front of the Town Hall, a Renaissance masterpiece designed by Elias Holl. We'll take in its symmetrical facade and classical proportions. Did you know this building was one of the first in Germany to be constructed according to the principles of Italian Renaissance architecture?
Right beside it stands the Perlach Tower, from which the city was watched over during the Middle Ages. We'll look at its structure and talk about its defensive role across the centuries.
Next up: the church of Saints Ulrich and Afra, a building that blends Gothic and Renaissance elements. As we admire its architectural layout, we'll talk about how this church is tied to one of the earliest conflicts between Catholics and Protestants in the Holy Roman Empire.
We'll then head to the Lechviertel, one of Augsburg's most picturesque neighborhoods, where we'll stroll along the canals that once formed part of the city's sophisticated medieval water management system, so impressive that it was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status.
Finally, we'll reach the Fuggerei, the oldest social housing complex in the world still in use. We'll learn about its layout, its rules, and the history of the Fugger family. Did you know the annual rent has remained symbolic since the 16th century?
We'll wrap up our tour of Augsburg in the city center after 2 hours on the route.
As this is a private tour, it can be slightly adapted to your interests. However, please note that the visits and itinerary will always be the same.
